Introductions

Hi Everybody! This reading blog is going to be lots of fun. I think our comments and discussions will have a lot more meaning behind them if we all know a little about each other. I'll start and then you can follow the same format in the comments section to tell us about you.

Name: Havilah
Age(optional): 26
Location: Lubbock, Texas
Favorite Book Genre: Fantasy. I've been branching out lately to other genre and have discovered I love almost anything as long as the story is interesting and it is well-written.
Favorite Book and/or Author: The book series that started my love of reading was the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. It will always hold a special place in my heart. David Eddings, Patrick Rothfuss, Brandon Sanderson, and Douglas Adams are also among my favorite authors.
Occupation: I work full-time as a stay-at-home mom. I have two kids (Ruth, 4 and Gareth, 2). We're expecting our third during the first week of June.
Why you are here: I am here because I love reading! Reading is even more fun when there are other people you can talk to about what you're reading.
Anything else? I can't think of anything else to add but if you can, please add it!!

Name: Angela
Age: 24 (will be 25 in a little less than a month)
Location: currently, Taos, NM
Favorite Book and/or Author: JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, though I like a lot of books. I love Terry Pratchett's Discworld, Brian Jacques' Redwall, Max Lucado's Christian inspiration books, and a lot of other stuff. Mostly fantasy, but other genres as well.
Occupation: Once my paperwork finishes processing, I will be be a BMS provider (read: during school babysitter) for kids with emotional issues, keeping them focused and safe during the school day.
Why I Am Here: I've loved to read as long as I can remember, and Kate and I discuss manga a lot. I was an English major in college and I miss discussing literature with a group. You get so much more out of a book that way.
Anything Else: I want to go back to grad school and possibly go as far as getting a PhD in British Literature, so that I can teach on the university level. Just think...a curriculum where you can make kids read all your favorite books and write papers on them...how awesome would that be?

Name: Ellen
Age: 22 in about five days.
Location: Twin Cities, Minnesota
Favorite Book Genre: Historical fiction, mystery, horror, and some nonfiction. My tastes can be rather macabre.
Favorite Book and/or Author: Terry Pratchett, Stephen King and Neil Gaiman are a few that leap to mind. As for individual books, no way could I name just one, so I'll just leave that be for now.
Occupation: University senior. I'm an anthropology major with a sociology minor, possibly looking into museum work (I currently work as a member of the floor staff for the Science Museum of Minnesota).
Why I am here: Honestly, to get me into reading again! The internet has sucked it out of me, and I need to get it back.
Anything Else: I also do a bit of writing on the side. Never finished anything, though; it's purely a hobby.

Favorite Book Genre: I started out with enjoying fun elementary books, like Beverly Cleary, etc., and in middle school I got into fantasy and sci-fi when I decided to read the fattest book I could find in the school library. It was Killashandra by Anne Mcaffrey. Not so much interested in her, and I now prefer young adult or even juvenile fantasy because it's cleaner. I also really enjoy mysteries, classics (The Great Gatsby, Crime and Punishment, The Count of Monte Cristo), and just fun stuff.
Favorite Book and/or Author:
Lately I would have to say I really look forward to Shannon Hale's stuff. But I generally don't play favorites.
Occupation: I'm a full-time wife and mom and love it. We have one little girl who is 19 months, and one on the way due in July. Before that I was a nature guide (I'm really into nature, conservationism) and substitute teacher. I love art and worked as a security guard at my college art museum before graduating.
Why you are here: I love reading. I want to broaden my horizons too. My husband's not a reader, so it's hard having no one to discuss a good book with.
Other stuff: I enjoy watching good, clean movies, listening to music. When I'm not pregnant I enjoy hiking, camping (even roughing it), rollerblading, biking, playing basketball, running when I'm not so out of shape. Right now all I do is walk around the neighborhood. I've been known to walk and read at the same time. I hate shopping. I love my family. I enjoy documentaries.

Favorite Book Genre: I love a good biography. I am fascinated with how and why people become who they are.
Favorite Book/Author: Most of my favorites are classics, but I guess if I had to pick one it would be "To Kill A Mockingbird". As a kid my favorite was "Anne of Green Gables".
Occupation: full time, stay at home mom. I have two little boys, Zach is almost 4 and Miles is almost 2.
Why you are here: To get my butt in gear and read some good books - I'm not the type who can't put it down... I'm the type who can't pick it up because I feel like I have a million more important things to do! I think this will be great motivation, a great way to get good recommendations, plus I love discussing with others.
Anything else? I'm a virgo, I love eating out/hate cooking, lover of music, good design, and my family.

Name: Kate
Age: 30
Location: Flagstaff, AZ
Favorite Book Genre: I don't have a favorite - I enjoy books from almost all genres. I have not read as many nonfiction books as I would like, so that is an area that I plan to work on
Favorite Book and/or Author: My favorites seem to change over the years, but long-time favorites include Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, and The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien. I also have a love for books by Thomas Hardy (I think it's the way he writes more than the actual story because his books are always so depressing, yet I find myself going back for more).
Occupation: I'm a stay-at-home mom of two boys - Daniel who is 5 next month and James who is 2; baby number 3 is due in July. I used to work as a civil engineer, and even took Daniel to work with me until he was 6 months old. Then we resigned (he was the office baby :D ), and I've been home ever since.
Why you are here: I love to read, and I love to discuss books that I've read. Reading has always been a part of my life, but not as much as I'd like it to be in recent years. I am trying to read more, and I think this bookgroup will help keep me motivated.
Anything else? I love to crochet - from blankets to baby clothes to Christmas ornaments. I also like to draw, but it's been a long time since I've made any serious attempts at it; this is another area in my life I'd like to get back into soon.

Favorite Book Genre: I don't really have a favorite I guess. I like lots of books from lots of different genre's. I seem to read a lot of teen sci-fi for some reason lately. But Chick-lit, Lord of the Rings, harry Potter...as long as it's entertaining, I'm happy!
Favorite book and/or Author: Well, I read a lot as a kid and then read nothing until college, and that was Harry Potter. I have to say, I absolutely LOVE Harry Potter! :)
Occupation: Right now I'm a stay at home mom to Skyler, who is 10 months old. Before he came along, I was a band teacher.
Why you are here: I love to read and it'll be fun to talk to different folks about books!
Anything else: I love and miss playing my clarinet every day, so I do a community orchestra once a week, go on walks. I'm learning to sew and digital scrapbook.

Name: Debra (but I think my posts will say Ghost)
Age: *sigh* 55
Location: Maplewood, MN (near St. Paul)
Favorite Book and/or Author: I can never ever give a favorite. It's just too hard. I can say that when I was a kid, Where the Red Fern Grows just tore me up but I'd go back and read it again. Lucifer's Hammer affected me deeply when I read it after having my first baby. Watership Down can even hold the interest of my physicist husband. I like fantasy, SciFi, Mystery, Historical Fiction, Manga, etc. I always have several books going, usually in different genres.
Occupation: I'm a for-real librarian. I also have a school library media specialist license and work in a k-5 school now but most of my experience prior to that was in a large university library and public libraries.
Why I Am Here: Like all of you I love to read. I'm excited about reading good books that I might not have taken a second look at otherwise.
Anything Else: My kids are fast readers, which delights me because I'm slow. I don't know why. Q will tell you that she and her siblings think that I have ADHD. Who knows? They may be right. I have noticed that I don't sit still. In reality your brain can only do one thing at a time. It can go very fast between things, but it can only do one thing. I think that every time I move it takes my mind off what I've read so I need to read it again. You wouldn't believe how many times I sometimes read the same sentence over and over again.

Why I Am Here: I work in a library and my family owns an independent bookstore in my hometown. I've grown up around books my entire life, and I love to share my favorites with my friends.
Anything Else: I'm an English major hoping to get into a career in publishing.
