Wee Free Men Chapters 13-14 Discussion

We reach the end of Tiffany's story, her showdown with the Queen and her discovery of the true power of the land she holds in her bones through her Granny. We also get an introduction to the most respected witch on the Disc, Granny Weatherwax, and Tiffany reminds Roland who the real boss of the land is. All's well that ends well, and Tiffany understands that she has a duty to the land, and to the borders.

Along with the discussion, we should probably decide what to read next so that people can procure the books. I like the look of both of our current suggestions, and if those who haven't contributed yet think of a title they're interested in sharing, by all means put it on our list and we can take a vote or something.

I'll be the first to comment. I know everyone is really busy. And I'm really not, but I'm also not always in the mood to discuss with everything that's been going on in my life, but I did want to make some comments about this book.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved how it ended, especially with Tiffany making the butter mold of a witch to slowly change the community's perception of witches. In the future, I think I will pick up the other books from this series to read since I found the humor and the story itself just a lot of fun. I had made notes that I wanted to bring up, but they are at home, and I am not, so hopefully some others will comment, and that might help me remember the other things I wanted to bring up or that I enjoyed.

As for the next book...I might have to opt out in reading this next one for the time being, depending on what is going to happen with my personal circumstances. I'll try to still get whatever book is chosen, I just don't know how soon that will be. I guess the real question is, though, is whether everyone is still interested enough in this project to continue it. I completely understand that everyone has different things going on in their lives (I certainly have that has limited my own participation right now), but I do wish that we had a little more participation going on. So, how do people feel about this? Should we continue on? Has it just been a busy month for all of us? Let me know what you think. I, for one, would really like to see this continue.

I'm also game for this to continue, since I love discussing books, but I agree that this time of year is rather tumultuous for a lot of us, with school getting out and a few of our members expecting new little ones soon. I don't mind a slower pace, since this book was so light and we kind of zipped through it, but regardless I definitely want to continue.

I'm so glad you enjoyed Wee Free Men, Kate, and the next one is actually my favorite of the three in the Tiffany Aching series, Hat Full of Sky. I hope you like that one also, and I highly recommend it to anyone else who enjoyed Wee Free Men.

I know I kind of bailed on this book and the whole discussion, but I just finished so here I am!

What I really loved about this book was the Wee Free Men themselves and Pratchett's humor, but it was a little too "out there" for me - the more I read the more "out there" it got. I was glad I read it, but happy to be done, you know? All the dream within a dream and are we always dreaming? stuff gets to be too much for me. I'm such a realist!

I haven't thrown a title out there yet but I'd love to just go with the next on the list! Hopefully I can keep up this time!

So has anyone who has been keeping up given any thought to our next title? We have a few good books on our list, and I'd be game to read any of them.

I'm actually fine with just going down the list on the right-hand side of the page...I believe the next would be "Peace Like a River." So I guess that's my vote, but I'm open for anything.

Aye me. I finished the book as soon as we started reading it and meant to take a few notes for discussion. But I never got around to it. Anyway...I really enjoyed Wee Free Men. The challenge of interpreting the WFM's accents was fun, the jokes were cute (I come from a family that appreciates puns). I like how she appreciates her brother more after everything they've been through and how he grows too. She's such a strong girl. I had to keep reminding myself that she was only eight (right?). I tried to look for the sequel at my library, but I'll have to get it from another branch.

I would also like to keep up with the reading our books. I'm due in about a month and a half and will try to continue keeping up after that. We'll see. With that in mind though, I think I'd like to wait for us to read my book for a while. I'm open to anything. Peace Like a River sounds great. Thanks Angela for choosing this book!

Yes, Tiffany is only eight, and we get to watch her grow and progress through the next two books as well. If you enjoy puns you'll enjoy Pratchett in general, he likes to play with words, so I'd highly recommend you try some of his other Discworld books as you have time.

Sounds like we're getting more and more votes for Peace Like a River, so unless anyone raises any objections we can start on that one if Ghost is willing and able to lead it.

Oh, just a random thought, since I know a couple of us are on break from school for the summer, if they want to take a turn while the school pressure is off now is a good time to say so. Just putting the idea out there.

I will pick up Peace Like a River tomorrow when I am out filling a prescription, so that is my vote on what to read next. I signed up for my local library's summer reading program where if I read 3 books, I get a free book. I think it will be hard for me to read 3 books with everything going on right now, but I am going to try. So, I am going to start reading this one right away, even if we put off the discussion for another book.

I was very interested in Lynnette's comment about Wee Free Men. I think I'm the opposite. I liked thinking about the dreams and the meaning of dreams and whether a dream was real or not. I love thinking about the sort of philosophical/theoretical things behind a story.

It's fine with me if we do Peace Like a River. I'm traveling right now and will be home tomorrow. I'll feel like I have a little more time after Tuesday and Wednesday when I have to teach a class at a summer institute at Hamline University. Not only am I still getting ready for that and traveling but I am also in the middle of our 4th quarter (year-round school).

Yes, I still want to continue. It would be ideal if we could be more active with posting but think about the alternative. We could not be doing this and then we wouldn't be reading these books at all. That would be a loss for all of us.

I got Peace Like a River today. I'm really excited to start reading this book.

I agree that it would be great if there was more participation, but I also know that a lot has been going on in people's lives here (myself included :) ), and obviously those things take priority to a reading blog. I agree that at least it keeps us reading, and I've enjoyed reading books that I would not have otherwise picked up (or even known about). So, I think this is great.

Okay. Sounds like I'm going to go get Peace Like a River. And I'll try to show more self control and pace myself this time. I'll be better able to participate in discussions that way.

I've read Peace Like a River, and I love it. I'm on summer break so I hope to actually start contributing again. I plan to reread the book to refresh.
