New Year, New Reading List
Hey guys, so we kind of lost our motivation after Fruits Basket last year and never chose any new books, but for the new year we're thinking we'd like to scrap our old reading list, start from scratch, and see if we can get this going again. Not to say that things on our list are bad, but we figure it's just a good idea to start fresh. So we'll clear the list, open it up for new (or re-) submissions, and see if we can get started. As before, we can opt in or out of each reading selection, no pressure. And if anyone has any other suggestions for improving this group, please let us know. We'd like to start reading in the next couple weeks, so please think about your book, post it, and we can decide who will go first. Thanks guys!

I think that sounds great. . . I am up for some new books. I just read a brief biography on Harriet Beecher Stowe and it made me want to read Uncle Tom's Cabin (I know, I know. . . How did I make it this far in life without reading such a classic.)
So, there's an idea.
I'll second Uncle Tom's Cabin. I haven't read it either, but I would really like to.
My suggestion is Uglies, but I think some may have already read it, so please let me know if you have and I can come up with a different selection.
Thanks for putting the post up, Angela.
I don't think there's anything wrong with reading something that some people have already read. I've never read either of your suggestions, but I'm fairly sure the one I want to suggest, The Giver, is one most of us have already read. I just want to read it with a group, since I feel it's worth some good discussion and I never got to read it in a school setting for that.
I haven't read either of those. Right now I'm reading The Glass Castle which would be a good one I think.
I have been wanting to read The Glass Castle ever since I 'earned' it through my library's summer reading program. I just haven't picked it up yet. Sounds like I'll finally do so this year. Glad you suggested it, Debra!
We have enough suggestions to start. Should we go ahead and make a flexible schedule and get a book going? Who would like to start?
I've already posted my book, everyone else put theirs on the list and we'll go from there with the options.
I just added a couple books to the list too.
Once we added them, how do you want to proceed, Angela? Does someone want to volunteer the first book, do we want to make a schedule of the order, how should we go about this? I would like to have some sort of loose schedule so that the person leading the next book has some time to prepare, we have time to get the next book, etc.
Whatever works best for you guys, I don't mind going first if no one else wants to, but I agree that we should keep them in order so that we have some idea what's next and be prepared for it, getting hold of the book and so forth. Let's let everyone put their books up, let's say we have until Wednesday or so, and then we can organize the list from there.
I like that idea. . . I am looking forward to seeing the list on Wed. with everyone's ideas.
Hey everyone,
I want to join in so badly, but I'm going to have to bow out for a while. I hope to jump in again in a few months maybe. We'll just have to see if life settles down a bit.
Maybe I'll pop in every once in a while and say hi.
Looks like you have some great books ahead.
Ok, looks like we've arrived at Wednesday with our initial booklist...others can jump in and post a book suggestion later if they wish, but for now, let's work from the list we've got and decide who's going first. Any volunteers?
We'll look forward to when you can join in later, Ruth! In the meantime, take care of yourself! :)
As for what to read first...I'm not ready to lead Uglies, so let's read that one in a few months. My vote would be for Uncle Tom's Cabin since I've always wanted to read that. I'm also looking forward to discussing The Giver. I read it a couple of years ago, but I think I'll appreciate it even more this time because there's great stuff to discuss in it. So, either of those are my vote. :)
I don't mind starting with The Giver, but I'd need a day or two to get to the library and borrow Uncle Tom's Cabin. Same for Uglies, really. I'd need enough time to acquire it. I also wonder if anyone would mind if I added a second book, in light of current circumstances. Brian Jacques, the author of the Redwall series, died this week, and he's been a favorite of mine for a very long time. Not that it's chock-full of discussion material, but it's a wonderful fantasy read, and just plain enjoyable to all ages. It doesn't have to be now, or even any time soon, but I'd love to share it with everyone.
I would be happy with The Giver (I read it in 2008, so it would be nice to go back and re-read it.)
I would also be happy to lead a discussion of Uncle Tom's Cabin. (That book has so many study guides it would be easy to ask some great questions about it.)
Let's for sure put Redwall in the queue. I have never heard of it and would love to try a new fantasy author.
I guess I am up for anything :)
I was able to get both The Giver and Uncle Tom's Cabin from the library over the weekend.
Since we need to make a decision in order to get going, I suggest we read The Giver first (it's a bit shorter) and then read Uncle Tom's Cabin after that. What does everyone think?
I like that idea of reading The Giver 1st then Uncle Tom.
How long do we have to read each book? The only other book I have read for this group was the Fruits Basket series. I would love a time line :)
Let me look over The Giver and divide up the pages and I'll post a schedule for it in the next couple days, since it was my suggestion. We don't really have a set time limit, but as short as it is we can probably finish it in a couple weeks, if you guys want to move that quickly, or draw it out a little longer if necessary.
